Sekiro: How to Break Enemy Posture and Perform a Deathblow

Read Posture and Vitality, time deflections, perform the red-marker Deathblow and recover from your own Posture break.

Lock on and read the enemy’s Posture

Platforms: PCEvidence checked

Sekiro’s Deathblow opening comes from breaking enemy Posture or catching an unaware enemy. Activision’s combat guide recommends locking on before engaging. Face the opponent and press the right thumbstick to lock on; the same control can release the target. The enemy’s Posture bar is above them, while Wolf’s is below his character, and the color expands toward a break. [1]

Steps

  1. Lock onto the intended enemy, then watch the Posture bar as you attack and deflect. [1]

Reduce Vitality when Posture recovers too quickly

Attacks increase enemy Posture even when blocked. An unblocked hit damages both Posture and Vitality. The guide links an enemy’s Vitality to its Posture recovery: lower health means slower recovery. For an opponent whose Posture recovers quickly, focus first on reducing Vitality and then work toward the Posture break. [1]

Steps

  1. Against fast Posture recovery, lower the enemy’s Vitality before relying on consecutive attacks and deflections to finish the break. [1]

Time deflections and use a counter-slash

Platforms: PCEvidence checked

Deflect by pressing guard just before the enemy’s blow lands. This prevents damage and harms their Posture, potentially opening a counterattack. Some attack strings need several consecutive deflections before a counter is available. After successfully deflecting, attack quickly to perform a Counter-slash and maintain pressure on the enemy’s Posture. [1]

Steps

  1. Press guard just before impact to deflect, then use Attack for the Counter-slash after a successful opening. [1]

Deliver the Deathblow during the red-marker opening

Platforms: PCEvidence checked

A red marker on the enemy’s body signals that a Deathblow is available. Get close and press Attack while the enemy is Posture-broken or unaware. The opening lasts only a limited time. Stronger enemies may require multiple Deathblows, indicated by red markers above their Vitality bar, so one successful finisher is not always the whole fight. [1]

Steps

  1. When the red marker appears, close in and press Attack promptly. Check the remaining red markers above Vitality to see whether more Deathblows are required. [1]

Recover if Wolf’s own Posture breaks

Wolf also has a Posture bar and can be left vulnerable when it breaks. Activision describes pressing Jump or Step Dodge quickly when downed or Posture-broken to perform a Safety Roll. That recovery is especially useful at low Vitality or against multiple enemies and is separate from triggering the opponent’s Deathblow marker. [1]

Steps

  1. If Wolf is downed or Posture-broken, quickly use Jump or Step Dodge for the Safety Roll before resuming the attack-and-deflection sequence. [1]
