Necesse: How to Recruit Settlers and Assign Automated Work

Prepare a settlement, housing and storage, then enable a reachable job for the appropriate settler.

PC

Create a settlement and housing

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Steps

  1. Craft and place a Settlement Flag. Recruit settlers from other villages or settlers encountered in the world. [1]
  2. Build beds in houses for additional settlers. Enclose rooms with walls and a door; missing beds, valid flooring or light lowers happiness. [1]

Give the settler storage and a recipe

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Steps

  1. Right-click a chest and use its Settlement button to choose the items permitted in that settlement storage. [1]
  2. Right-click a workstation and press its Settlement button. Choose Add Recipe, select the item and set an output amount with the plus/minus controls. [1]

Check task restrictions and priorities

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Some tasks require a specific settler: fishing is restricted to Anglers. [2]

Steps

  1. Open Work Priorities to enable and rank the needed task category. [2]

Limits & applicability

  • Use Assign Work for forestry, fertilizer and husbandry zones; these tasks depend on work zones. [2]

Automate a forestry job

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Forestry is assigned as a zone rather than by placing a crafting recipe. The starting setup uses planted saplings and a nearby chest that permits saplings and logs. Settlers can then replant saplings after cutting trees. This makes the zone, the allowed storage contents and the available saplings separate parts of the setup; a zone by itself is not the entire supply chain. [1]

Steps

  1. Open the settlement interface, choose Assign work → Assign forestry zone, and select the area. Plant saplings inside it and configure the nearby storage for saplings and logs. [1]

Supply a farm and a cooking chain

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

A settler with farming skill harvests and replants crops near the settler’s house. Seed storage must permit seeds and plants. The wiki’s bread example connects three jobs: farming wheat into storage, milling wheat into flour, and cooking flour into bread. The recipes use items from settlement chests, which is why workstation access and storage access both matter. [1]

Steps

  1. Make a farmland field near the settler’s house and plant the initial seeds yourself. Ensure the settler has access to a chest permitting seeds and plants. [1]
  2. For the documented bread chain, add the Flour recipe to a nearby Grain Mill and the Bread recipe to a nearby Cooking Station. [1]

Control how much a workstation produces

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The recipe line exposes quantity and repeat behavior. Use the plus/minus quantity controls for a count, or the arrow before minus to choose Do until X or Do Forever. Shift-clicking plus or minus changes the quantity by ten. These are production settings; they do not turn a disabled work category back on. [1]

Steps

  1. Choose a recipe amount or repeat mode that matches the intended stock level. Use Shift with the quantity controls for increments of ten. [1]

Inspect remaining work blockers

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The Command panel can order settlers to follow you or guard a location. Its Clear orders action lets them return to work. If a settler remains assigned to an adventure or guard task, this is another control to inspect alongside work priorities and restriction zones. The guide’s documented configuration checks do not prove that every stalled settler is free of pathfinding bugs. [2]

Steps

  1. Use Clear orders in Command when you want selected settlers to return to their regular jobs. [2]
