Import cows for a pasture-based milk supply

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Update 8 introduces cows and calves as pasture animals. Import cows through the Livestock Trader when building a milk supply. This guide follows the main-branch 0.8.090–0.8.104 update, rather than mixing its recipes with an unlabelled newer beta. [1]

Cows supply milk and can also be butchered for beef and hides. Those are different uses of the herd; keeping a milk-producing herd is the relevant path for cheese. [1]

Steps

  1. Use the Livestock Trader to import cows. [1]
  2. When preparing pasture space, account for the pasture’s size-based Planks construction cost. [1]

Expect monthly milk outside winter

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Milk is a monthly seasonal output, with no winter milking. A stopped winter milk yield is therefore expected under these rules. Plan the cheese chain around that seasonal gap rather than assuming the Cheesemonger alone can create new milk. [1]

Breeding is seasonal too: cows breed in summer and offspring are produced in spring. The announcement ties breeding to both season and herd size, without giving a universal birth count for every pasture. [1]

Produce Animal Feed before winter

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The Livestock Farm, formerly Sheep Farm, turns Oats into Animal Feed at a 1:2 ratio. All listed pasture animals, including cows and calves, need feed each winter month or can die. [1]

Steps

  1. Use the Livestock Farm to craft Animal Feed from Oats at the documented 1:2 ratio. [1]
  2. Check the Livestock Farm’s Work Area for the pastures it should serve. Workers can leave that area to retrieve Oats for feed, but gathering from pastures is limited to the set area. [1]

Unlock a level 3 Cheesemonger and supply milk plus salt

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The Cheesemonger is a level 3 Burgage Plot artisan workshop. Cheese requires both milk and salt, so importing cows alone does not complete the production chain. [1]

Steps

  1. Use a level 3 Burgage Plot to unlock the Cheesemonger artisan workshop. [1]
  2. Supply the Cheesemonger with Milk and Salt. The documented recipe uses one of each to produce two Cheese. [1]
  3. Set the artisan’s Active Recipes; artisans begin without active recipes until you choose them. [1]

Check the seasonal input before calling production broken

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

If the chain stops in winter, first compare the milk input with the seasonal rule. If an artisan has not begun, compare its configuration with the Active Recipes requirement. These are documented conditions of the chain, rather than proof that all missing production is a bug. [1]
