Gloomhaven: How to Enable Crossplay and Check Branch Compatibility

Turn on crossplay in General options, activate voice chat in a hosted session, and distinguish the default release from incompatible legacy save branches.

Turn on Crossplay under Options → General

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The September 2023 PC update adds crossplay alongside the console release. The publisher gives a specific switch: Crossplay in Options, then General. Turn it on when preparing a cross-platform session. This is a game setting, separate from the Steam beta branch chosen for the installed build. [1]

Steps

  1. Open Options, select General, and turn Crossplay on. [1]

Activate voice chat once the session is hosted

The same update adds voice chat, which can be activated when the session is hosted. Use that hosted-session context for voice setup. The announcement does not give a universal push-to-talk key, so use the game’s offered controls instead of assuming a keyboard binding from this guide. [1]

Steps

  1. After the session is hosted, activate voice chat if the group wants to use it. [1]

Recognize the crossplay networking update

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The January 2024 update synchronizes the network version with consoles. It also fixes a specific PC-to-console combat desynchronization involving an action and initiative-line scrolling. When comparing that symptom with the release history, preserve both simultaneous actions rather than treating every dropped session as the same event. [2]

The repaired interaction names both players’ actions. [2]

Use the Mac default-branch history when identifying builds

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The January 2024 notice merges the Mac branch into default, with Mac users receiving the same latest branch as other PC players. It describes no gameplay change from that merge. A separate legacy branch mentioned in the notice serves old-version continuity, not compatibility with default. [2]

Check the legacy save boundary before switching builds

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The notice explicitly warns that open beta and V28009 are incompatible with the updated default branch. Moving from either legacy branch to default loses progress. Keep this warning attached to the old save when choosing a build for a group; the crossplay toggle does not convert the campaign’s save format. [2]
