Plan the field and equipment
Prepare a tractor, soil-preparation tool, wheat-capable seeder, crop-care equipment, combine with a grain header, and trailer. A roller is optional. The grain header is the relevant harvesting attachment; owning a combine alone does not complete the equipment list. [1]
Under seasonal growth, GIANTS lists September–October for wheat sowing and July–August for harvesting. Check this before buying inputs for a field that cannot yet be sown. [1]
Prepare soil and fill the seeder
Some direct-sowing machines combine cultivation and seeding, reducing separate field passes. Choose the tool for its capability, not just its shop category. [2]
A regular plow has high tractor-power requirements and low working speed. Check the tool’s requirements against your tractor when planning field preparation. [2]
Tool choice also changes weed management. A regular plow prevents weeds, but a spader does not provide that protection. Do not assume every implement that prepares the field has the same weed effect just because it completes a soil-working pass. [2]
Steps
- Read the field information and apply lime with a compatible spreader only if required. [1]
- Cultivate the field, use a plow if required, or skip the cultivation pass when your seeder supports direct seeding. [1]
- Buy seeds, park the seeder beside them and use Refill. Seeds load into the machine automatically. [3]
Select wheat and cover the field
Steps
Manage fertilizer and weeds
Use solid fertilizer with a fertilizer spreader. Liquid fertilizer instead uses a sprayer, so match the purchased input to the machine you own. [4]
Steps
- Fertilize once, allow a growth stage, then apply the second standard fertilizer pass. [4]
- Remove small weeds with a weeder and medium weeds with a hoe. Large weeds require herbicide, so early treatment avoids waiting until that stage. [5]
Limits & applicability
- Herbicide adds expense and a yield penalty. Mechanical weed removal early in the cycle avoids relying on it as a late rescue. [5]
Harvest and use the wheat
Steps
- When ripe, attach the grain header, lower and activate it, harvest row by row and unload the grain tank into a trailer. [1]
- Enable straw swath before harvesting if you want the combine to leave collectible straw. [1]
- Check the prices screen before selling. Alternatively store the wheat, use it for appropriate livestock, or deliver it to a grain mill for flour. [1]
