Online play requires the game update

The 1.17 announcement explicitly requires that update for online play and asks players to apply the latest update before playing. It gives App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17 as the title-screen numbers for that release. This is the documented release requirement, not a claim that every later release will always keep those same numbers. [1]

Spirit ashes are unavailable in multiplayer or outside a monument area

The starter guide requires a nearby rebirth monument and the monument icon at the left of the screen for spirit summoning. It also says spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer and only one type is summoned at a time. These conditions explain unavailable ashes without claiming a newly discovered bug. [2]

Torrent cannot be summoned in a restricted area

Bandai Namco’s starter guide says the spectral steed cannot be summoned in some areas or dungeons. A whistle that is unavailable there is therefore a documented restriction, not proof that it has disappeared from the inventory. The publisher also distinguishes a dead steed, which requires consuming a Crimson Tears flask to summon again. [2]
