Dota 2: How to Use a Hero Build and Publish Your Own

Use the Hero Build Panel, subscribe to community advice, and create a Steam Cloud build with the right sharing settings.

Choose a Hero Build rather than a general Steam Guide

A Hero Build is Dota 2’s in-game advice for the hero you are playing. Valve distinguishes it from a Steam Guide, which can be a broader written walkthrough. Builds recommend ability levels, their timing and items, and can include author-written tooltips about strategy. Choose the build format when you want that advice accessible during a game. [1]

Steps

  1. Browse Hero Builds in the Steam Community and subscribe to the one you intend to use, or create your own on Dota2.com. [1]

Open the Hero Build Panel in a match

Valve’s instructions put the Hero Build Panel at the top left of the game screen. The panel can show the default build for the current hero, your own builds, subscriptions and selected popular community builds. Subscribing is therefore a way to bring a selected community build into the same panel as your personal choices. [1]

Steps

  1. Join a game, open Hero Build Panel and select the intended build for the hero you are playing. Use its ability, item and tooltip advice while deciding your upgrades. [1]

Create a personal build and save it to Steam Cloud

For a custom build, Valve directs you to sign into Dota2.com. That opens your local Hero Build page, where builds can be created or edited. They are saved to Steam Cloud. You can keep your own ability and item recommendations there without publishing them to the whole community. [1]

Steps

  1. Sign into Dota2.com with Steam, open the Hero Build page and create or edit the intended hero’s build. [1]

Choose who can see the published build

Publishing has separate visibility choices: private, Steam Friends or everyone. A published community build lets other players subscribe, comment, rate or favorite it. Use the friends option when the intended audience is your own group, and public visibility when you want the wider community to use the build. [1]

Steps

  1. Use Publish to Steam Community on the Hero Build page, then choose the intended visibility. [1]
