Core Keeper: How to Ride Cattle with a Saddle and Manage a Mount

Turn existing cattle into a mount, use the Saddle UI, adjust off-mount behaviour and recognise the 1.3 interaction and mount-fix changes.

Use the 1.3 cattle-mount feature

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Riders of the Underground adds two saddle items, Saddle and Racing Saddle, that can turn cattle into mounts. The feature applies to all cattle, so you do not have to locate the new Orex simply to start using a mount. [1]

A cattle mount is another travel option alongside walking, minecarts, boats, vehicles and teleportation. This guide begins once you have a saddle available; the publisher announcement describes its use but does not provide a complete saddle-material recipe. [2]

Place the Saddle on the chosen cattle

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Choose the cattle you want to ride and approach it with the Saddle. Placing the saddle on the animal changes it from ordinary cattle into a mount. You are using an item on the cattle, not crafting a separate vehicle in the world. [2]

Steps

  1. Approach the chosen cattle and place the Saddle on it. [2]
  2. When interacting with the saddled animal, keep a clear line of sight. Version 1.3 makes that a requirement for cattle interactions. [1]

Name the mount and choose its off-mount behaviour

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The Saddle UI manages the mount’s name and its behaviour while you are not riding. These settings belong to the saddled animal, so use that interface when you want to organise multiple mounts or change what this animal does after you dismount. [2]

Steps

  1. Open the Saddle UI and give the mount a name that helps you recognise it. [2]
  2. Use the same interface to choose the animal’s behaviour when not being ridden. This setting concerns its off-mount behaviour rather than changing a minecart or other vehicle. [2]

Return the animal to ordinary cattle

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The transformation is reversible: removing the saddle returns the animal to cattle status. You do not have to keep every saddled animal permanently in the mount role. The announcement does not specify a universal keyboard button for removal, so follow the interaction shown by your current client. [2]

Steps

  1. Remove the Saddle when you want the animal to return to its ordinary cattle role. [2]

Find the new Orex if you want a different cattle type

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The new Orex cattle lives in the Moss sub-biome within the Forgotten Ruins. Its location is an optional choice for a new mount; it is not the unlock requirement for saddling cattle you already have. [1]

Know which mount problems the stability patch fixed

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The 1.3.0.3 stability patch fixes permanent mount removal from boss attacks and unintended honking while interacting with the map. If either behaviour appears in an older build, compare the installed version with that recorded fix before changing your Saddle settings. [3]

Limits & applicability

  • That note records a specific disappearance fix. It does not establish that mounting makes the animal invulnerable or that a previously removed animal will be restored. [3]
