Coral Island: How to Manually Save, Load and Branch Your Progress

Use the 1.3 single-player save slots, understand autosave triggers and limits, and load a chosen point from the Escape menu.

Check the single-player save system and character slots

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Coral Island 1.3’s expanded save system applies to single-player. The manual save and slot instructions here are not a procedure for multiplayer; check the mode before searching for missing controls. [1]

There are up to ten character slots. A character slot and the saves belonging to that character are different levels of the system, so you do not need a new character simply to keep another point in that character’s story. [1]

Existing saves transfer automatically. Players who already had more than ten existing saves keep them, but the developer says no new character slots can be created until the count drops below ten. Avoid treating that grandfathered count as a failed migration. [1]

Create a separate manual save before branching

Manual saves can be triggered anywhere and at any time, with up to eight manual saves per character slot. Keeping a separate save before a decision gives you a point to return to rather than relying on an autosave that may advance with play. [1]

Steps

  1. Trigger a manual save and choose the slot for the progress you want to preserve. [1]
  2. Rename the save to identify the branch or decision it preserves. The game supports save-file renaming; use a name that makes the later Load Game choice clear. [1]

Understand when autosaves replace a recent fallback

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Autosaves trigger on building, mine and diving entry, before and after festivals, before cutscenes and when teleporting. A recent autosave may therefore reflect progress beyond the decision you wanted to revisit; keep the chosen manual point separately. [1]

Autosaving has a sixty-second cooldown and can be toggled in Settings. Two qualifying actions close together do not necessarily create two immediate saves. A trigger describes when the system can save, not a guarantee of a new file on every rapid transition. [1]

Load the exact character save you intended

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Load Game in the Escape menu is the documented route for returning to a particular save. Use the save’s name and intended point to distinguish your preserved branch from a later continuation. [1]

Steps

  1. Open the Escape menu, choose Load Game and select the saved point you want to resume. [1]
  2. When continuing a different branch, save that continuation into the slot you intend to use rather than casually replacing the point you meant to keep. [1]

Separate a loading failure from a missing save option

Hotfix 1.3-1249 separately fixes a hang after loading a save. Check the client build if loading never finishes. That documented bug is different from the intentional single-player-only restriction and the eight-manual-save limit. [2]
