Clash Royale: How to Unlock and Use Card Evolutions

Unlock the card’s evolved form with six matching shards

To use an Evolution in Clash Royale, collect six Evolution Shards for that specific card. Supercell lists sources including Pass Royale, challenges, events, shop offers, Magic and Seasonal Lucky Chests, Trophy Road and Evolution Boxes. The six-shard requirement unlocks the form; it is distinct from putting the card in the proper deck slot and cycling it during a match. [1]

Steps

1. Collect the six Evolution Shards required for the specific card you want to evolve. [1]

Put the Evolution into the proper deck slot

Place the unlocked card in the Evolution Slot, unlocked at Arena 3, or the Wild Slot, unlocked at Arena 10. The Wild Slot can activate any unlocked special form or a Champion. If a card has both an Evolution and a Hero Form, tap it and use the switcher button to choose the form you intend to use. A card in an ordinary slot stays normal in battle. [2] [1]

1. Move the card to the Evolution or Wild Slot and, if it has multiple special forms, choose Evolution with the switcher. [1] [2]

Check its ability before the battle

The Evolution tab on the card’s page explains its enhanced abilities. In the deck, the correct slot makes the card look charged and shows its evolved appearance. These checks are useful before entering battle: having enough shards in the collection is not the same as having activated that form in the deck you are about to use. [1]

Cycle the card until the diamonds turn purple

During the match, play the card the required number of times until the diamonds above it turn purple. On its next play, the evolved form is deployed and its special ability happens automatically. There is no separate manual activation step in the support instructions. After that evolved play, the cycle repeats before another Evolution deployment. [1]

1. Complete the cycle, then deploy the card once the diamonds are purple. After the evolved play, repeat the cycle for another use. [1]

Check event-deck restrictions if the Evolution is unavailable

Evolutions are usable in modes supporting your personal deck, but special event decks may restrict them. Supercell also says Mega Draft Challenges generally do not include Evolution Cards, with possible exceptions for particular challenges. A special-mode restriction should be checked before assuming the unlocked form or account is broken. [1]
