Documented workaround

Steam desktop shortcuts open DirectX 12

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Civilization support says Steam desktop shortcuts always use the top default launch option. For Civilization VI that opens DirectX 12, even after selecting DirectX 11 as the preferred option. To use DirectX 11, launch through the Steam client instead of the desktop shortcut. [1]

Documented steps

  1. Open Civilization VI directly in the Steam client when you need DirectX 11. [1]

Epic now starts DirectX 11 by default

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The launcher-removal article says Epic’s Civilization VI starts DirectX 11 by default. Selecting DirectX 12 there requires the documented -dx12 launch option. A different default between Epic and a Steam desktop shortcut is therefore expected in this support article. [1]

Documented workaround

Steam no longer shows the renderer choice

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

If Steam no longer displays the launch choices, support directs players to the game’s Properties menu, General tab, to change their preferred version. This addresses a saved launch choice rather than establishing a missing or corrupt renderer installation. [1]

Documented steps

  1. Right-click Civilization VI in Steam, select Properties, and adjust the preferred version on General. [1]
