Backpack Battles: How to Move Bags Separately and Use Grid Storage

Use the toolbar’s separate bag and item edit modes, switch to grid storage, and use undo, recipe tooltips and the item library while arranging a build.

PC

Open the inventory toolbar

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The released 1.1 update adds a toggleable toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Undo and redo are available there, and the action for pushing items into storage has moved inside it. When looking for the storage action after the update, check that toolbar rather than assuming the feature has been removed. [1]

Steps

  1. Open the bottom toolbar to access undo, redo and the action that pushes items to storage. [1]

Choose whether to move bags or their items

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The toolbar offers a mode for editing only bags and another for editing only items. In these modes bags and items can move freely and independently of each other. Choose the relevant mode before rearranging a build when moving one layer would otherwise disturb the other. The release also adds keybinds for switching between the edit modes. [1]

Steps

  1. Select the bags-only mode to rearrange bags independently, or the items-only mode to move items independently. [1]

Switch the storage box to its grid view

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Grid storage is an alternative to the storage-box view and is accessible from the same toolbar. The default keyboard toggle is G, and Ctrl plus the mouse wheel zooms the grid. This setting controls the storage presentation; the patch does not say it adds extra purchased bag space or changes item statistics. [1]

The default toggle appears in the new keybind list. [1]

Steps

  1. Enable grid storage from the toolbar or press its default G binding, then use Ctrl plus the mouse wheel to adjust its zoom. [1]

Inspect recipe connections while planning

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The update lists Alt as the default binding for recipe tooltips and Tab for the item library. Use those inspection tools while planning the intended recipe. [1]

Ingredients on the library’s information panel can be spotlighted by clicking them; that also works for the recipes shown with Alt. [1]

Steps

  1. Press Tab to open the item library, or press the default Alt recipe binding while inspecting the relevant recipe. [1]

Read the arrangement feedback

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The release adds an animation when an inventory shift is blocked by the border, and another when a crafting connection cannot start because an item already belongs to a different recipe. Those are two distinct arrangement conditions. Resolve the condition indicated by the feedback rather than assuming all failed moves are caused by the edit-mode selection. [1]

The recipe conflict is a different documented reason for a refused connection. [1]

Use the controller navigation additions when relevant

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

For controller users the update adds right-stick jumps between points of interest and D-pad scrolling of scrollbars. These are navigation controls, while the toolbar remains the documented access point for the separate editing modes. The announcement does not give console-specific button names for opening every toolbar option, so the keyboard defaults above should not be read as controller bindings. [1]
