Island backup cannot be enabled
Nintendo identifies no internet connection or no active Nintendo Switch Online membership as possible reasons for failing to enable island backup. The account must also have a resident on the island. Check those specific prerequisites before assuming the island’s save data is corrupt. [1]
Documented steps
- Confirm an internet connection, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a resident linked to the selected account. [1]
The backup timestamp has not changed while the game is being played
Island backup is periodic and occurs while the console is connected to the internet and the game is not being played. Nintendo displays the last backup time on the title screen. It is not described as an immediate cloud upload after every action taken on the island. [1]
A second resident cannot enable an already enabled island backup
Only one resident enables the island’s backup. If another resident already enabled it, a different resident cannot enable it again. Nintendo says the original resident can disable it if a different Nintendo Account is to take over. The island data is shared across residents, so the restriction does not mean only the original resident’s progress is protected. [1]
Animal Crossing does not appear in ordinary Save Data Cloud backups
Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not support the ordinary Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud feature. It has a separate island-backup feature that must be enabled in the game, using an active membership and an account with a resident on the island. Missing ordinary cloud-save controls are therefore not evidence that this special backup was already enabled. [2] [1]
Documented steps
- Use the game’s title-screen Settings → Island backup → Enable island backup flow with an eligible account. [1]
A lost console never had island backup enabled
Nintendo says restoration requires the original console to have had island backup enabled. It cannot be turned on remotely after access to that console is lost. If the original console is still available, Nintendo directs players to the save-transfer procedure instead. This limitation should not be replaced with a promise that an unconfigured island can always be recovered. [1]
