Animal Crossing: New Horizons: How to Enable Island Backup

Enable the game-specific backup with the correct resident account and confirm the last backup time on the title screen.

Choose an eligible resident account before opening Settings

Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses its own island backup rather than ordinary Save Data Cloud. To enable it, choose a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a resident already living on the island. The game must be updated and the console connected to the internet. Island data is shared across residents, so one eligible resident’s configuration covers the island rather than requiring a separate copy for every player. [1] [2]

Enable island backup from the title screen

Launch the game with that user and remain on the title screen. Press the minus button to open Settings, choose Island backup and then Enable island backup. If the option fails, check internet connectivity and the membership attached to the selected Nintendo Account. This is the island-specific setup; enabling a different game’s cloud backup does not follow this procedure. [2]

Steps

  1. On the title screen, press minus → Island backup → Enable island backup. [2]

Check whether another resident already enabled it

If another resident already enabled island backup, you cannot enable it again as a different resident. The original resident can disable it if you want another account to manage the feature. Nintendo’s FAQ confirms that only one resident enables it but the island data and all players’ progress are backed up together. [2] [1]

Check the timestamp after the game has had time to back up

After enabling the feature, leave the console connected to the internet while Animal Crossing is not being played. Backups occur periodically in those conditions. The date and time of the latest backup are shown on the title screen, giving a concrete check that is more useful than assuming the enable action itself instantly uploaded every change. [2]

Steps

  1. Check the title screen for the last backup date and time after the console has been online with the game not in use. [2]

Keep backup recovery separate from moving to another working console

The backup feature is intended for a console that is lost, stolen or sent for repair, and it must have been enabled before access to the original console was lost. If the original console still works and is available, Nintendo points to the island-transfer procedure. Island save data cannot be moved between Nintendo Accounts; it can only be transferred between consoles. [2]
