Riot Games is officially turning back the clock on League of Legends. On July 29, the long-requested League of Legends Classic mode arrives with the deployment of Patch 26.15, bringing back the early-era experience that defined the game’s formative years. The mode centers on a recreation of the original Summoner’s Rift and leans into the pacing and balance of Season 3, while incorporating popular champion kits from even earlier periods.

Quick Facts

  • Release Date: July 29, 2026, via Patch 26.15.
  • Starting Roster: 60 champions, including the original 40 plus 20 early additions.
  • Progression: Includes a free, one-time "Classic Levels" track and a "Summoner’s Journey" ranking system.
  • Community Influence: "The Council" voting system allows players to help decide on future content and gameplay adjustments.

A Return to Early Gameplay Pacing

For players who remember the game's earlier years, the mode promises a departure from the high-mobility, fast-paced nature of modern League. Scaling is intentionally slower, and resource management is significantly more punishing; players will find themselves running out of mana more frequently. The map features the classic Summoner’s Rift layout, complete with the original jungle experience where camps deal more damage and respawn faster. Don’t be surprised if the Blue buff proves to be a genuine threat in the early game.

To ensure the experience remains playable, Riot has implemented visual updates to lighting, textures, and shadows, ensuring that while the layout feels nostalgic, it doesn't suffer from the poor readability of the 2009 client.

Classic Items, Runes, and Masteries

The return of classic itemization means iconic builds like "Atmogs" and "Metagolem" are back on the table. The meta will also shift significantly due to the return of old-school Runes and Masteries. Players will start with three Rune Pages and can unlock more through a progression system that mirrors the traditional level-30 grind, but with a faster pace. Mastery pages will fully unlock once a player reaches Classic Level 4.

Champion Kits and Community Choice

The 60-champion roster focuses on pre-rework kits, bringing back notorious playstyles that haven't been seen in years. Players can expect to face classic threats such as AP Master Yi, mid-lane Sion, and Kassadin builds that historically commanded high ban rates.

Riot is also placing the future of the mode in the hands of the community through "The Council." This voting system allows players to weigh in on which champions should be added to the rotation next and provide feedback on potential gameplay changes. Additionally, the mode introduces a preference-based role selection system designed to move away from the old "last pick - don't speak" culture of early lobby chats.

Cosmetics and Progression

Players can earn rewards through "Classic Levels" and "Seasonal Classic Passes." These include Influence Points (IP), Blue Essence (BE), and Classic Skin Tokens, which can be used to unlock 2009–2013 style skins. New "Portraits" are also being introduced to replace or rotate loading screen splashes, ranging from doodle styles to unique champion reinterpretations. Alongside the main mode, Riot plans to release a themed "ARAM Mayhem Classic-ish" mode to complement the launch.
