Former Sony Interactive Entertainment of America president Shawn Layden has weighed in on the company’s PC strategy, defending the decision to bring PlayStation exclusives to the platform as reports circulate that Sony intends to halt its blockbuster narrative releases on PC.

For years, PlayStation owners held exclusive access to the company’s biggest titles. That changed in 2020, when Sony began a push to bring its library to PC, typically following a one-year window after the initial console launch. Now, however, that trajectory may be shifting. Recent reports indicate that Sony is looking to pivot its PC strategy, potentially restricting future releases to online multiplayer and live-service titles while keeping its flagship narrative experiences locked within the console ecosystem.

The Logic Behind the PC Push

Speaking to PSI on YouTube, Layden argued that the initial move to PC was never primarily about immediate financial gain. Instead, he framed the shift as a necessary expansion of brand awareness. The goal was to place intellectual properties like Horizon in front of gamers who were not part of the existing PlayStation customer base.

"The PC thing, in my mind at the time, was not to make money, frankly. It was 'How do I get my intellectual property in front of people who wouldn't normally see it?'" Layden said.

Layden noted that with Sony increasingly adapting its gaming franchises into film and television projects, reaching a broader audience is essential. He suggested that relying solely on the existing PlayStation population to carry the momentum of these franchises into other media formats would be an uphill battle.

Hardware Sales vs. Reach

Addressing concerns that PC ports might cannibalize hardware sales, Layden contended that the two audiences are largely distinct. He suggested that players who are willing to wait 18 months for a title to hit PC were unlikely to purchase a console in the first place.

"If someone's waiting 18 months for something to come to PC, we didn't lose a sale to them. They weren't going to buy the hardware anyway," Layden added.

Despite this perspective, reports suggest that current leadership at PlayStation views the situation differently. There are claims that the company has been dissatisfied with the consistency of PC port quality and does not believe the revenue generated justifies continuing the current release cadence. It remains unclear how this potential shift will impact upcoming projects or the visibility of Sony's characters in the broader PlayStation ecosystem.
