If you have spent your time in Phasmophobia hiding in the safety of the van, prepare to feel even less secure. Kinetic Games is officially pushing back the 1.0 release of its hit co-op horror title from its previously planned 2026 window to the second half of 2027. According to the developers, this extra time is necessary to ensure the full launch delivers on a complete reimagining of the game’s horror experience.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • New Release Window: Second half of 2027
  • Developer/Publisher: Kinetic Games
  • Key Audio Tech: Wwise implementation
  • Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch 2

Turning Monsters Back Into Ghosts

The core goal for Phasmophobia 1.0 is to make the game feel fresh for veterans who have clocked thousands of hours in Early Access. Marketing and partnerships director Asim Tanvir noted that while current ghosts have become iconic, they often lean closer to generic horror monsters or zombies. The team is moving away from that aesthetic to create entities that feel truly supernatural.

The redesigns are rooted in the specific stories of the ghosts' deaths. During a preview, the team showcased a drowned spirit with hair drifting as if submerged, and another entity bearing the physical scars of electrocution. One particularly unsettling demonstration featured a child ghost slamming her head into a wall before crawling across the ceiling directly toward the player—a clear shift toward a more modern, cinematic style of horror.

Audio Overhaul and Mechanical Changes

While visual changes are the most immediate, the audio overhaul may be the most significant shift for gameplay. By implementing Wwise, an industry-standard audio system, Kinetic Games is introducing realistic sound propagation. Instead of the current muffled audio, sound will now travel dynamically through doors, walls, and different materials. Rain will sound distinct depending on its location, and players will be able to pinpoint the direction of noises, including those behind them.

Proximity voice chat is also receiving an upgrade to match this new system, allowing players to hear their teammates' panicked voices travel through the environment in a more realistic fashion. These changes are designed to strip away the certainty that veteran players have developed over years of play. While previous knowledge will still be useful, players will need to adapt to new patterns and behaviors rather than relying on old muscle memory.

Senior producer Ryan Wolfe and Tanvir emphasized that this 1.0 vision is the culmination of what creator Daniel Knight originally intended for the game. The delay ensures that the team has the necessary time to refine these horror systems, lore content, and the planned Nintendo Switch 2 version, ensuring the highest quality launch possible for the long-running title.
