The Love and Deepspace fandom is currently in a state of upheaval. Following the recent reveal of the game’s newest potential love interest, a werewolf character named Valko, the developers have announced they are canceling the character entirely ahead of his planned July 9 debut.
In a statement posted to X on Tuesday, the developers confirmed, “We have decided to cancel both the launch and any further development of the new love interest.” The team went a step further, committing to a future roadmap that excludes any additional love interests, stating, “We also commit that no additional love interests will be introduced in future content plans.”
The Backlash Behind the Decision
The decision to halt Valko’s development follows a week of intense, often hostile, online protests. While many players expressed frustration that the addition of a new character would distract from the development of the five existing love interests or delay critical quality-of-life updates, the protest escalated far beyond typical social media critique.
According to reports aggregated from Chinese social media and shared on Reddit, some particularly disgruntled fans took their grievances to the physical level by sending cow dung to the company's headquarters. Reports also suggest the game has seen a loss of over 1 million players in the days following the initial reveal.
What Happens Now for Players?
Despite the cancellation of Valko, the developers are moving forward with the content originally slated for the update. This includes a new addition to the game's photo mode. In an attempt to address the community's demands for more focus on established characters, the studio stated: “Going forward, the entire team will focus on further developing the stories and long-term companionship experiences of our five existing love interests.”
To soothe tensions, the developers are offering 30 days’ worth of premium freebies to the player base. However, this move has not silenced the controversy. The game’s Discord server is currently divided; while one faction of the community is relieved by the cancellation, others are calling for Valko to be reinstated. Many fans have taken to social media to argue that by bowing to the pressure of the most aggressive protesters, the developers have set a dangerous precedent for future community management.
