Hideo Kojima is no stranger to taking the path less traveled, but even the legendary developer faced significant hurdles when trying to find a home for his latest project, OD: Knock. During a recent industry event, Kojima revealed that the journey to bring his vision to life was met with widespread skepticism from major corporate publishers.
Kojima began mapping out the horror concept while wrapping up work on Death Stranding. Seeking a publishing partner, he took the pitch to several industry heavyweights, ranging from established giants to emerging companies. According to Kojima, the response was nearly universal: they called the concept "crazy," admitted they did not understand the design, and ultimately decided they were unable to produce it.
A Vision Too Risky for Traditional Publishers
For the creator of Metal Gear, these rejections served as a stark reminder of why he chose to pursue an independent route with Kojima Productions. While mainstream publishers were looking for safe, proven formulas, Kojima was pushing for a new gameplay system that had never been seen before. In an industry often hesitant to take financial risks on unproven ideas, his project was viewed as a liability rather than a breakthrough.
“I pitched to many people, to the big companies, and also to the up-and-coming companies,” Kojima recalled. “All of them said the same thing. They said that I'm crazy, and that they really don't understand the concept – that they will not be able to do it.”
Finding a Home with Xbox
The project finally found its footing when Microsoft stepped in. OD: Knock is now being developed in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, which provided the creative freedom and advanced cloud technology Kojima needed to move forward. The game, created in collaboration with Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele, is being positioned as a psychological horror experience intended to push the boundaries of the genre.
While gameplay specifics remain under wraps, the project features a star-studded lineup including Sophia Lillis (It), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and the late Hollywood icon Udo Kier (Bacurau). Kojima has described the goal of the game as getting the player to "overdose" on terror. To ensure the experience remains accessible, he has also teased a unique, unannounced system designed to help players progress through the game even when the horror becomes overwhelming.
As development continues on the Xbox Series X and PC title, Kojima’s insistence on maintaining his creative vision suggests that OD: Knock will be exactly the kind of "creative madness" his fans have come to expect.
