Xbox has officially updated its console dashboard to feature a new "EXCLUSIVE" label, providing clarity on the release strategy for Gears of War: E-Day. The game, which is set to arrive on October 6, 2026, will be a console exclusive for Xbox Series X/S, effectively ruling out a previously planned PlayStation 5 version.
The new label appears alongside other existing indicators on the Xbox dashboard, such as those denoting optimization for Series X/S or inclusion in subscription services like Game Pass and Ubisoft+. While the label confirms that Gears of War: E-Day will not be coming to PlayStation, it remains worth noting that the title is still slated for a PC launch.
Understanding the New Labeling Strategy
This labeling initiative comes as Microsoft refines how it communicates the availability of its first-party titles. According to Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty, the decision to keep games exclusive is made on a "case-by-case basis." Booty has emphasized that the company wants to provide clear incentives for players to invest in the Xbox ecosystem.
"We want a reason for people to get on board with Xbox, we want them to have a reason to buy an Xbox, we want them to have a reason to be an Xbox fan," Booty said. "At the same time, we want to reward all our players that have been with us for a long time—we know that exclusives are important, and that's why we've got Gears coming in 2026 and Clockwork Revolution coming in 2027."
Clockwork Revolution, also slated for a 2027 release, is similarly marked as a console exclusive.
Multiplatform Commitments and Future Plans
Despite the move toward exclusivity for certain titles, Microsoft has maintained that its strategy for big multiplayer and live-service games remains unchanged. These titles will continue to be released on multiple platforms to honor existing promises to players.
"If we've promised something to players already, we're going to honor that promise," Booty added. "Our principle is when we announce the date, we announce the platforms. So, it's going to be case-by-case, but we're going to be clear, that when it's got a date, it's got a platform and you'll know what the choice is going to be."
The shift in strategy appears to be a work in progress. Newly-installed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has indicated that the company intends to honor previously announced multiplatform titles, such as Halo: Campaign Evolved, while evaluating potential exclusivity for future projects based on the company's financial performance. Consequently, some upcoming titles will still see releases on PlayStation 5 and potentially Nintendo Switch 2, as recently confirmed with State of Decay 3, the Senua sequel, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond.
As of now, the new "EXCLUSIVE" label has not yet appeared on Xbox.com store pages for Gears of War: E-Day or Clockwork Revolution, though with several months remaining before their respective launches, that may change as the release dates draw closer.
