If you have been waiting for the return of SEGA's high-speed arcade classic, you can expect Crazy Taxi World Tour to feel very familiar. Following previews from Summer Game Fest 2026, producer Kenji Kanno has clarified that the title is being built to stay faithful to the original, albeit with a modern, more chaotic edge.
While recent entries in the series have often been defined by their solo arcade runs, Kanno confirmed that the main draw of Crazy Taxi World Tour remains its single-player experience. However, the development team has officially addressed a long-standing request from the community: the addition of multiplayer.
Finally Bringing Multiplayer to the Arcade Classic
According to Kanno, the desire for a multiplayer mode dates back to the 1999 original. During the Summer Game Fest sessions, he explained that the development team at the time was unable to implement it due to the technological limitations of the era.
“Even in 1999, a lot of players were saying, ‘hey, I want to play this game with my friends’. But at that time, we had technological limitations,” Kanno said. “But here in 2026, we have staff members in the development team who are very experienced with multiplayer games. So, we were able to make that area out for this time.”
While the game will feature multiplayer, Kanno emphasized that it is intended as an addition for “hardcore players or end-game players who want to spend more time” with the game, rather than the primary focus of the experience.
Development and Platform Details
The upcoming title, which was officially announced during the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2. The project has also sparked conversation regarding development practices, with SEGA confirming via its Steam listing that it utilized generative AI to assist in the creation of Crazy Taxi World Tour.
The announcement trailer, which prominently featured The Offspring’s “All I Want,” confirmed that the game will follow longtime protagonist Axel as he navigates high-speed routes. With the release approaching, players can look forward to a blend of the classic, frantic single-player loop and the long-awaited ability to take the action online.
