Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone, the developer behind the massive success of Stardew Valley, has provided a fresh look into the ongoing development of his next project, Haunted Chocolatier. In a recent blog post, Barone addressed the game’s progress, offering a candid look at the challenges of designing the title's recipe book interface.
The action-RPG and life sim, which tasks players with running a sweetshop in a realm of ghosts, is currently undergoing a rigorous design process. Barone described his approach as one of self-imposed pressure, noting that he is iterating on the user interface repeatedly to ensure it feels “seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, and aesthetic.”
The Quest for the Perfect UI
For Barone, the recipe book is a vital component of the player experience. “This is a UI you will be using fairly often, so it has to be perfect,” he wrote. His design goals focus on efficiency and readability, aiming for a system where players can complete their tasks with the minimal number of clicks. He emphasized that the data layout must be balanced, avoiding both sensory overload and mundane presentations.
“If the data is all clustered together, it will be disgusting to look at,” Barone explained. “The data needs to be grouped into compelling, intuitive and easy to read/understand groupings. It needs to look appealing and intriguing.”
The developer admitted that his commitment to perfection extends beyond mere functionality. While he acknowledges that players might take a well-designed menu for granted, he is striving for a level of polish that actively delights the user. “It’s a big game,” he added. “So there are many things for me to fuss over.”
No 'Half-Baked' Reveals
Addressing the lack of recent media updates, Barone apologized for the absence of new screenshots. He explained that he prefers to avoid showing the game before he is satisfied with the current state of development, comparing the premature release of assets to serving “half-baked bread.”
Barone also noted that he is currently in a position where he does not feel the need to rush marketing efforts. With Stardew Valley having sold over 50 million copies, he has the flexibility to take his preferred, iterative approach to development, allowing him to “torture” himself over the details until he is truly satisfied with the final form.
