Firaxis is continuing its post-launch support for Civilization 7 with the release of update 1.4.1. Following the recent 'Test of Time' overhaul, this latest patch aims to refine core mechanics while introducing long-requested features and a new content expansion.

New Features and Map Tech

The most immediate addition for many will be the inclusion of hotseat multiplayer. This mode allows multiple players to compete on the same device, taking turns in sequence. While it feels like a throwback to earlier strategy titles, it provides a functional way to play locally without requiring separate hardware.

The game’s map generation has also received a significant technical update. The new archipelago map type, built using Voronoi generation tech, replaces the older version—now rebranded as 'archipelago hemispheres.' Firaxis notes that this new system is designed to create more organic, less repetitive locales with randomly placed clusters of islands and distant landmasses.

Happiness System Overhaul

Update 1.4.1 brings a meaningful change to how the Happiness stat functions. Moving away from a simple binary system, Firaxis has returned to a five-stage scale ranging from 'angry' to 'ecstatic.' Additionally, governmental choices now provide passive abilities that trigger immediately alongside their standard celebratory effects. Celebrations themselves have been adjusted to be shorter and more difficult to trigger, addressing feedback that they were previously too easy to maintain.

Brush and Blade DLC Reception

Alongside the free update, the Brush and Blade Collection has launched for $29.99 / £24.99. The pack features content centered on Japan and Korea. Japan’s portion is available now, including leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Heian and Sengoku Japan civilizations, and four new wonders: Mireuksa, Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace, Seongsan Ilchulbong, and Nachi Falls.

The Korean content is slated for release before September and will include Admiral Yi Sun-Sin and the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. Despite the inclusion of these historical figures, the expansion has struggled with player sentiment. With only 38% of user reviews currently positive, the primary criticism is directed at the price point. Many players have voiced frustration that the DLC is not included in the Civilization 7 Founder's Edition, and that the cost feels steep while the base game is still undergoing fundamental adjustments.

While the 'Test of Time' update was intended to stabilize the game’s reputation, Steam reviews remain hovering just above 50% positive. Firaxis continues to work on these core systems, but for now, the community remains divided over the value proposition of the game's latest paid content.
