If you have been holding out hope for a brand-new World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery (SoD) server, it is time to adjust your expectations. Despite a recent surge in community interest and rumors sparked by new data files, Blizzard has officially confirmed that no fresh servers are in the works.
The speculation began to swirl after players identified a new WoW Classic build, numbered 1.15.9.68185. Given that the original Season of Discovery launched on the 1.15 build, many in the community assumed this update signaled an upcoming fresh start. However, those hopes were quickly dampened by Blizzard Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield.
Addressing a player concerned about the longevity of their progress in the current community-led events, Greenfield was blunt: "There will be no fresh SoD."
The Reality of Launching New Servers
Greenfield explained that the decision is rooted in the logistical demands of maintaining the World of Warcraft Classic experience. "'Just open a new server' is not as trivial as most people think it is," he noted. "It requires many teams and a large portion of the Classic team to make that happen. Then there's an ongoing effort to manage each phase as it rolls out."
With the development team focused on other projects, Greenfield emphasized that a new SoD server would be a distraction they cannot afford. He added that while he personally enjoys the mode, it would be "irresponsible" for the team to split their focus at this time. Active development for Season of Discovery officially concluded in June 2025.
The "Fake Fresh" Community Revival
Even without official support, the Season of Discovery player base has remained remarkably active. In response to the lack of new servers, the community organized a "Fake Fresh" event, particularly on the Wild Growth server. This grassroots effort aims to replicate the excitement of a server launch by encouraging players to start together, effectively creating a fresh experience on existing infrastructure.
The event has seen tangible success, with player counts on the server doubling to 4,600 since the initiative began. While the community hoped this activity might prompt an official intervention from Blizzard, Greenfield’s comments clarify that the current state of SoD is the final one. He encouraged players to enjoy the revival currently underway rather than waiting for an official fresh start that isn't coming.
"I hate to come in and definitively say things like this but... it would suck to NOT play this current revival in the vain hope some fresh realm will spin up," Greenfield said. "That just isn't happening right now."
For those looking to get involved, the Fake Fresh events are currently running on both North American and European servers, offering a community-driven way to experience the unique talent systems, raids, and dungeons that define the Season of Discovery.
