It is now confirmed that a follow-up to the hit RPG is in the early planning stages, but finding a team to take the helm is proving difficult. Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have been actively searching for a studio to develop Baldur's Gate 4, and it has emerged that the designers behind Baldur's Gate 2 were among those approached—and subsequently turned the project down.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Status: Hasbro is currently seeking a developer for Baldur's Gate 4.
  • Declined: Baldur's Gate 2 designers James Ohlen and Kevin Martens turned down the project.
  • Primary Concern: The scale of competing with the success of Baldur's Gate 3.
  • Technical Hurdles: Building a new engine for a sequel is estimated to take at least five years.

The Shadow of Baldur's Gate 3

James Ohlen and Kevin Martens, who are currently developing Exodus at Archetype Entertainment, were contacted by Hasbro CEO Chris Cook regarding the sequel. According to Ohlen, who spoke with PC Gamer, he turned down the opportunity because he believes he would fail under the pressure of following Baldur's Gate 3.

"I wouldn't want to compete against that," Ohlen explained. "Doing Exodus is hard enough, but having to compete against Baldur's Gate 3? That would be insanity."

Larian Studios, the developer behind the 2023 massive success, previously confirmed that it would not be returning to the series. The studio has shifted its focus back to its own established world, intending to continue work on the Divinity series, which gives the team more creative freedom than the constraints of Dungeons & Dragons 5e combat.

The Technical Cost of a Sequel

During discussions with Hasbro, Ohlen explored the possibility of utilizing the engine used for Baldur's Gate 3 to help mitigate the development load. However, the prospect of building an entirely new engine from the ground up—a task Ohlen described as "at least half a decade of horror"—was a significant factor in his decision to pass on the project.

With Larian out of the picture and former series veterans declining the role, the search for a studio continues. Hasbro is reportedly looking for a team capable of handling the immense expectations associated with one of the highest-rated games of all time. As of mid-2026, there is no official word on who will ultimately take on the development of the next entry in the franchise.
